The Golden Visa program was introduced in Portugal through Law 29/2012 and regulation No.11820-A/2012, in relation to which several investment programmes have been introduced to provide access to the visa.

The Portuguese golden visa program allows the foreign citizen to obtain temporary residence in Portugal, and therefore provides access to the entire Schengen area for a 2-year duration, with the continued possibility of renewal and of obtaining permanent residency after 5 years and, after another 6 years of permanent residency, obtaining Portuguese citizenship.

In the case of those inclined towards conducting property investments, it is possible to acquire the Golden Visa for a:

  1. Property investment with an economic value of not less than €500,000;

  1. property investment with an economic value of not less than €350,000 in the case of a property over 30 years or in the case of the purchase of a property in an urban redevelopment area.

The non-property investments that still allow access to the Golden Visa provided for by Law 29/2012 are:

  1. Investment equal to or greater than €250,000 for the development of cultural or artistic activities;

  2. Investment equal to or greater than €350,000 for the development of research activity;

  1. Investment of funds equal to or greater than €500,000 for financing small and medium-sized businesses on Portuguese territory;

  2. Investment of funds with a value equal to or greater than €1,000,000;

  1. Creation of at least 10 jobs.
